Juneteenth Celebration with the Franchell Boswell Educational Foundation

A little over a week before the Juneteenth holiday this year, the Franchell Boswell Educational Foundation invited me to document their trip to Galveston. Upon quoting the job, I learned that we would be taking a historic trip through Galveston to learn about the island's history as part of the African-American story. Needless to say, I was extremely excited to attend.

We started at the oldest black Baptist church in Texas; Avenue L Baptist Church. The church was founded by slaves in 1840 and has an incredibly storied history. The original stained glass windows caught my attention. Galveston is known for its strong storms and hurricanes. The fact that these windows have survived so much destruction is divine intervention if I've ever seen it.

If you have not gone on the history tour of Galveston, I encourage you to do so. As a native Houstonian who's been to Galveston several times annually my whole life, I never knew how it was connected to the slave trade and to circulating the news of slaves' freedom. The history is right under our noses and I challenge anyone reading this to learn about some darker times but you'll also be able to appreciate the beauty and culture that makeup Galveston Island.

Enjoy the photos from our day in Galveston and please leave a comment below.
