Deborah and Keith’s wedding reception was held at The Plaza Club on the top floor of One Shell Plaza in Downtown Houston, Texas. An absolutely fabulous event with great food, amazing music and a couple who’s love lit up the room.

PPBF Weekly Challenge: Isolation With Shallow Depth Of Field

This Week’s Assignment:
Subject Isolation With A Shallow Depth Of Field

As photographers we are storytellers. Our job is to provide elegant tools for our customers to tell their stories. One way we can create a more elegant and polished story, and further define ourselves as professionals, is through the use of a shallow depth of field. A shallow depth of field is a tool a photographer can use to draw the viewer’s gaze to a certain area in a finished portrait, making it more clear was to what the photograph is trying to convey. This week, your assignment is “Shallow Depth Of Field”. Tell a story, and make the subject of your story more clear through the use of a shallow depth of field.

I love this image. It was shot during a night bridal shoot I had a few months ago at Discovery Green in the heart of Downtown Houston. My Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 is one of my favorite lens’, partly because of the smooth creamy bokeh it produces. This image was shot wide open (f/1.4) with two speedlights bounced off a cement wall directly behind me.

Deborah & Keith’s Wedding – Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, Houston Texas (part 1)

The first time I spoke with Deborah I could tell she was going to be a glowing bride. She seriously GLOWED through the phone. I did not get a chance to meet Keith until the rehearsal, but I knew he had to be a spectacular guy to land Deborah. I actually met Deborah through her daughter, Suzanne, who is a close friend of my wife, Kristen, a few years ago. What a great family! This was one of those fun events where it was evident that the goal was to 1. have a wedding and 2. HAVE A GOOD TIME! While part one is focused on the ceremony, you will want to come back for part two next week; what a party!

These wedding images are of two people deeply in love with each other. Their friends and family were awesome and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked through the door. I don’t know what could be better for a photographer.

I hope you enjoy Deborah and Keith’s Wedding images as much as I enjoyed shooting them.

2010 Marketing Campaign – Houston Wedding & Portrait Photography

In 2009, I mainly focused on using Social Media sites like Facebook (jonathan.lgolden) and Twitter (@jlgolden) for marketing. While I was able to get great exposure, it is important for me to use some of the “battle tested” marketing techniques of the past as well. Inbound marketing techniques (blogs & social media) are great but I see no reason to shun traditional (outbound) marketing.

Bob Bates’ was kind enough to give me permission to use his beautiful daughter Sophie on my flyer. I plan to battle the elements and go door to door getting the word out about Jonathan L Golden Photography!

I read a few photography blogs religiously, and right before Christmas, Tony Hoffer had a contest where he gave away a free photo shoot. His readers had to send in stories explaining why they should get the free shoot. I was shocked when Tony wrote that more than a few readers sent in stories mentioning that they had not had a portrait taken in 20 years! One of the best ways to document you and your families journey through this beautiful life is with annual (or bi-annual) portraits. Meghann – Bridal Photography in Houston Texas

Meghann had a fabulous wedding in Tennessee a little over a month ago. Before the wedding we were on the fence with regard to Bridal photography. With the amazing weather we’ve had here in Houston lately, she decided to go ahead and invest in what turned out to be some beautiful photos. We had a BLAST! I think taking Bridal portraits after the wedding is a great idea. The dress has already been worn so the bride does not have to worry about getting her dress dirty. With a huge stressor removed the bride has the freedom to be much more relaxed and enjoy the session.

At dusk, we headed out to Houston’s Discovery Green park armed with multiple flashes, Nikon CLS and many more beautiful backdrops then we could use. After two full hours of “look how awesome that is, lets go shoot there” Meghann was a little worn out (I don’t blame her). As you will see, I think we came away with some fantastic Bridal photos.

Meghann is beautiful! Jesse (her husband) is quite a lucky man.

Jaclyn & Brian – Houston Wedding Photography

Jackie, was the first of my wife’s college friends that I met when we were dating. We stayed at their Brooklyn apartment for a couple days back 2006 while we attend my sister-in-laws graduation from NYU. Jackie was clearly used as the “filter” and thankfully I passed the test.

Jackie and Brian are high school sweet hearts who have been together for over 10 years! Jackie has a special place in our hearts because during our families busy time (marriage & babies) Jackie made it to all of the Houston events. That’s three trips to Houston. She flew down for the engagement party, wedding and baby shower! After last weekends “airport fun” that we experienced making one trip from Houston to Newark and back, I realize that she made quite a sacrifice to be there for us.

Their wedding was held on campus of the beautiful Princeton University. They had a beautiful wedding ceremony and incredibly fun reception. The mouth watering lamb burgers they served for pass hor’ dourves were to die for. I wish them all the happiness in the world. After 10 years it’s finally time to start crankin out the babies!

One last thing I want to throw in…Jackie is one of the creative editing directors for the incredibly entertaining train wreck known as The Real Housewives of New Jersey. They just started filming season two so be sure to check it out in Spring 2010.

Katie & Chad – Houston Wedding Photography

Chad and I went to Baylor University together and lived in the save apartment complex. As a side note, I have to say that this was probably the best time of my life. We participated in all the normal college activities and quite a few of the “abnormal” activities also. We survived the experience and I was honored to be one of the few college friends that made the guest list.

Chad and Katie were married at the Villa Antonia in Austin, Texas. My wife and I drove up to the wedding from Houston on Friday and stayed at the lovely Barton Creek Resort. I have to admit, since the birth of our first child (Ava Savoy) we had not been on vacation. We left her in Houston with her grandparents and hit the road.

The Villa was absolutely amazing, and the wedding ceremony was beautiful. I’ve been to quite a few weddings in the last two years but these two were glowing the entire day. I wish them all the happiness.
