Asher at 6 months – Houston Texas Childrens Photography

I can’t believe its already been 6 months. Its sad but some times I get so wrapped up in my business that I forget to take portraits of the ones I love the most. My son Asher has really blossomed into quite the gentleman…and flirt. He’s legendary in the local grocery store for giving a “wink and a smile” to every female who walks by. Sometimes, it feels like they all stop and smile back. He is such a charmer. I’m clearly biased but Asher is destined to do big things with his big glowing eyes and infectious smile. Every time I see him I’ve got to tickle him and hear his adorable giggle.

Without photography, it’s easy to forget these precious moments because children grow up so fast. Before I know it, he’ll be walking and saying Daddy. I’ve truly been blessed with a wonderful family.

Life and Asher Samuel | Houston Newborn Photography

WOW! Its been over 2 months since I clicked “Add New Post” for this blog; smh. Actually, its been weighing quite heavily on me lately because I really do have a lot of great things to post. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some fantastic clients recently.

As far as life is concerned, during my 2 weeks off from my 9-5 at Christmas 2009 I was lazily clicking through the channels one afternoon. Somehow, I found myself watching the Ironman World Championships (shocking right in the middle of BCS Bowl Season). The Ironman Gods must have been summoning me toward 12+ hours of pain and suffering because 2 weeks later, after running the Houston Half Marathon, I decided to buy a triathlon bike, hop in the pool and start training for my first triathlon. I’ll be starting my triathlon career at the sprint distance Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 in Galveston on April 24. I’m super excited!

ALSO and most importantly, my wife Kristen and I were blessed with a beautiful (and healthy) newborn baby boy; Asher Samuel Golden. I’d like to thank all my friends and family for their loving thoughts and prayers while Asher spent the first 7 days of his life in the NICU at Texas Children’s Hospital. At nearly a month old now, he is sleeping, begging to be fed and going through $.65 diapers just like any other newborn. We have truly been blessed!

As I ease back into a regular blogging schedule, I figured I’d start with a few photos of the newest member of our family.

We were in good hands!

Augustine – Houston Texas Newborn Photography

A perfect follow up to my previous post. Some of you may remember when I did a newborn shoot for Danielle and her newborn daughter Ariana a few months ago. Danielle was hanging out with her friend Josephine when the topic of photography came up. Danielle quickly pulled out a photo from our session to “show off.” When Josephine saw the pictures, she quickly called me up to book a newborn photo session.

3 days later, I arrived at Josephine’s residence to find a beautiful 7 day old baby boy. Augustine was nice and chill during the entire session. Newborns have a mind of their own. Often cranky, sleepy or hungry (I don’t work at 3AM when they are usually wide awake) I love when I get a newborn who is laid back and comfortable. As you’ll see below, he was very easy to work with and I was able to capture some great images.

Photographing Newborns – Houston Texas

I was going through my RSS feed in Google Reader earlier today when I came across Jodi’s update from MCP actions. I first ran across this video some time ago when I was researching techniques for photographing newborns. I’ve found photographing newborns to be both challenging and rewarding. There are 50 different social dynamics going on once the photographer arrives. As with anything else, preparation is key.

A lot of times, you have a new mom with her first child. Newborns photograph best within the first 7-10 days of their lives so mom is undoubtedly in super protective mode. This video will help those who aspire to photograph newborns prepare for the very tricky yet incredibly rewarding job. For mom’s looking for newborn photography, this video provides a benchmark of what you should expect.

Below are some examples of some of my Newborn Photography work.

Some tips that I personally keep in mind the night before and while driving to the shoot:

1. Send the parents an email ahead of time kindly asking them to have the child fed and comfortable upon your arrival. Often overlooked…

2. Know what 4-5 looks you want to get and stay organized.

3. Build a rapport with the parents. Start a conversation and continue it throughout the shoot. There’s something about awkward silence that’s…awkward. The more comfortable they are with you, the more relaxed they will be, which allows you to get great shots.

4. Bring Purell! You’ll be handling your camera, light stands, props and most importantly the baby. Showing that you are germ concious goes a long way.

5. Relax and have fun.
